Play Ideas by Age

Imagine your pre-schooler's play possibilities!: ages 3 to 5
- Halloween costumes don't need to be packed away all year long! Dress up and act out fairytales you read together.

- Help your child make a secret hideout by putting a blanket or sheet over a table or chair. Boxes can become furniture and toys and books can help create a "home".

- In a safe place, play tug-of-war with an old blanket or towel.

- Pretend to be different animals, making sounds like that animal and moving around (crawling, jumping, running) like that animal moves.

Nurture confidence and competence
in the primary school years: ages 5 to 8

- Build anything from a castle to a miniature village to a child-sized room using blocks videos or clean milk cartons or old cereal boxes. Tell stories about who lives there and what is happening there.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father.
